AFL: Finals Day III
Looks like the SMH (traditionally a Rugby League paper) is really getting in on the act with AFL congregation prays Christmas comes early:
They call it a religion in Melbourne, but it's Sydney that really treats the AFL like church: devout only on special occasions, but enthusiastic once we get there.
And today is Christmas Day. It's all about the food, the beer, the expected bounty from a big bloke in red and white - Barry Hall - and the determination to be drunk and happy by sunset. Sydney does this well, so a Swans victory will be a perfect fit.
A fair-weather city in more ways than one, the city prefers its AFL team to win, and win in sunshine. So a predicted top of 25 with a good deal of bright light will enhance the mood, which has bubbled nicely all week and started to boil in the last two days.
At Stanmore Public School the principal and her deputy prefaced their trip south for the match by getting pupils to dress in red and white.
At Royal Prince Alfred hospital a nurse decked out a ward in club colours.
