Parking Tickets
The world's 1st parking tickets were given out in Nineveh (now Iraq) over 2,000 years ago to people who parked their chariots on the king's road. the fine? Death by impalement.
There are times that I think that the old punishments should be brought back. :-)

On the one hand, the lawyers wouldn't really be able to quibble about the sentences - a longer or a shorter stake doesn't change the outcome. On the other hand, as you suggest, it gets hard to differentiate between the seriousness of different crimes....
