Do Not Call...

I sympathise with the writer mention in Column 8:

Invasive telemarketing has plumbed new depths, according to Paul van Reyk, of Petersham. "I've just received one of those unbelievable calls," Paul reports. "Phone rings, I pick up, some [music] comes on and a recorded voice says 'Hello. We have an important message for you but all of our operators are busy. Please hold on.' Funnily enough, I didn't."

I also hung up. Then I got a call to ask why I didn't stay on hold or leave a message...

My standard response when I don't know the caller is to say "Sorry, but I don't want any..." If they persist then I get ruder and hang up.

I sometimes wonder why I bother with "Sorry"... after all, it is them disturbing me, not the other war around.

It took a while, but eventually it got to the point where I have no qualms or hesitations to be rude to them, or to just hang up on them in mid-sentence if they won't let me get a word in.

I'll politely say "No Thanks" to those who will give me the chance, but they are a pretty small minority.
