Not Cuddly: Echinda

Like the koala (yesterday), this was a low-resolution copy of a photo taken by me at Featherdale. What is most fascinating about this animal (apart from being a monotreme - egg laying mammal) is that the back feet are on backwards. It took about 30 shots to get one where this is clearly evident. When walking it looks almost as if the echinda is walking on the top of its feet with the bottom curled round and facing the back (actually they are attached backwards):

Everytime I see a picture of a echidna, I think of Jim Hensons; The Storyteller. I remember one of the stories had this huge echidna-man-thing. I was only young, so I was scared to death of it! Hrm, I must go search the video shop for a copy of it.

There's a friendly echidna at the zoo here. Victor and I are old friends. I love to watch children pet him, feeling the individual spines and getting a sense of how springy the spines are. Fascinating animals!
